What are Genetic Tests?

Genetic tests indicate any changes in genes, chromosomes, and gene dosage. Genetic tests can diagnose an underlying genetic condition, based on which the best management and treatment plan for you and your family can be decided. Some reasons for genetic testing:

1. To learn whether you have a genetic condition that runs in your family before you have symptoms

2. To learn about the chances of a genetic condition in the current or future pregnancy

3. To diagnose a genetic condition if you or your child has symptom

4. To understand and guide your cancer prevention or treatment plan.

There are many different kinds of genetic tests. Genetic testing is individualized based on your medical and family history and what condition you’re being tested for. A Genetic Counsellor can give you information about all relevant tests and help you decide which tests you can do to get a diagnosis/relevant information about the genetic condition.
